Law Day 2014: What It Is, and What You Can Do
The fun runs have finished, the coloring contests are closed, and colleges and high school across the country have set up talks for meaningful dialogue. Yes, Law Day is upon us yet again and the legal community’s put in a concerted effort this year to make sure that, on this the year of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it does justice to the year’s theme. What is Law Day?
Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, Law Day takes place on May 1 on every year and celebrates the importance of law and the role of the courts in all our lives. While not a government holiday, it is still celebrated with events such as educational Law Day programs for both adults and youths, fun contests for kids, and legal aid clinics.
What’s This Year’s Theme?
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Law Day’s theme this year is named American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters. Talks will revolve around voting rights and the importance of improving both access to voting and the procedures involved in casting one’s vote.
What Can I Look Forward To This Year?
Unfortunately, many of the events surrounding Law Day have already taken place, but the day itself still holds some things to enjoy. According to the American Bar Association, events this year include a national roundtable on voting, a panel on the Leon Jaworski Public Program from 5 to 7 pm, and a dialogue on voting involving nearly 350 high school students.
